Lanark Thistle Bowling Club celebrates 250th birthday

AS A club based at the former site of Lanark Castle, it is deeply appropriate that Lanark Thistle Bowling Club is still soldiering on after 250 years!

The club, which was originally established as Castlehill Bowling Green way back in 1760, celebrated its landmark birthday recently at South Lanarkshire Council headquarters in Hamilton.

Provost Russell Clearie presented club secretary Allan Crozier (67) with an engraved rosebowl marking the anniversary, at an event also attended by Clydesdale MSP Karen Gillon, Clydesdale North Councillor Mary McNeill and other Lanark Thistle members.

"We are the fifth oldest club in Scotland," said Allan, a Lanark Thistle member for 35 years.

"We are very proud of the fact that we have reached such a great landmark.

"And we are still playing on what was the motte of the original Scottish castle."
