Lanarkian sports organiser Millar Stoddart retires

Gruelling 70-hour working weeks were once the norm for dedicated sports organiser Millar Stoddart, of Lanark.

Millar, who is retiring as South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture community recreation manager on October 31, used the superior fitness levels he gained from playing badminton regularly to cope with the rigours of doing two jobs back in the 1980s.

He said: “When Clydesdale Sports Council was formed in 1982, I took over as a volunteer administrator to double the 35 working hours a week I was already doing working as a Roads Bonus Officer.

“I did my sports council work in the evenings and at weekends, but was never overly tired. I was able to cope because of my fitness and the fact that my wife Moira was very understanding.
