Lanark’s Joanne Calderwood wins MMA bout in India

NOT content with wanting to be the best Mixed Martial Arts woman fighter domestically, Lanark’s Joanne Calderwood has recently returned from India after a tremendous victory against a highly-rated Eastern European opponent.

Joanne, who only had her first MMA fight against France’s Noellie Molina in February, travelled to New Delhi as she fought on a massive international fight card in front of 12,500 people on India’s biggest MMA show – The Super Fight League.

The 26-year-old, who trains at Lanark MMA Club and the Griphouse Gym in Glasgow, fought Ukranian Lena Ovchynnikova, regarded as being the next big thing in women’s MMA due to her 8-1 professional record.

But her reputation did not faze Joanne, who, took the fight to her opponent from the beginning.

And, despite only having four weeks notice for the fight, Joanne put in a very dominant performance to win unanimously on points after three tough five-minute rounds.

Joanne said: “I took the fight at short notice but I had been training really hard in the gym so it wasn’t going to be a problem.”
