Lasley hails new Motherwell signings

“The boys did very well,” said Keith (36), who scored a stunning third goal in Motherwell’s win (match report on page 47).

“It was the first time they had been out there in a match situation with Motherwell and they will be happy to get that under their belt.

“It lets us get a little glimpse into their abilities and their strengths and weaknesses. And likewise, they will see what their team-mates round about them can do and can’t do.

“They have settled well into the dressing room and look capable of making an impact this year.”

Keith said that the ’Well players had worked hard on physical fitness this pre-season, so it was good to get a game under their belts.

He added: “Albion Rovers were a really good test for us, especially with that start to the game when we went 1-0 down.

“We had to be patient and work our opportunities. Eventually we did that and scored some nice goals.”

Lasley said he was “absolutely delighted” to have recently agreed a new one-year contract to stay at Fir Park.

“Everybody knows how much this club means to me,” he added.

“We got there in the end and I’m absolutely delighted to be here. The club’s position financially has been well publicised.

“We’re not stupid. The players – especially the experienced ones – would hate for the club to be in any peril. We understand that case.

“Hopefully I can lead the club to another good season in the league and cups.”

Lasley is sorry midfield partner Stephen Pearson has departed for the Indian Superleague.

“Pearo was a really big player for us last year,” he said. “I can’t underplay the influence he had for us.

“It’s disappointing but I can understand the situation.

“He might be back, you never know. This club’s got a funny knack of players coming back again. We would like that.

“I wish Pearo all the best. He’s a fantastic professional and a good friend.”
