Late comeback sees lady bowlers in last gasp win

In the past this has not been a very successful venue for the ladies, but hopes were, as always, high. With several changes to the team due to illness and holidays, each rink had a few new faces, but this did not seem to faze Cumbernauld as the first few ends were very tight.

As the game progressed the carpet, which was very different from the one at Cumbernauld, was presenting problems to both teams. Fintry seemed to adjust to the conditions faster and soon ran into a twelve point lead.

However, Cumbernauld fought back and two thirds of the way through the game were only two points adrift.

Soon the match was all square and stayed this way until there were only two teams left playing their last ends. From one of these Cumbernauld took three shots to go three up in the match, leaving one match to finish. Exciting stuff.

With only the skips left to play their shots in the last game Fintry were lying shot, Cumbernauld were second and both had a bowl to play. The Fintry skip fired to try and take the jack to her bowls at the rear. She failed and Cumbernauld did not need to play their last bowl as the game was won by two shots. Well done ladies, winning away from home and at a particularly difficult venue is not easy.

The ladies’ next game is away to Stirling on Saturday, November 2.

The Gents team were also playing in the ICL and had a home game against the Allander Club.

They had a very successful game running out very worthy winners by 116 shots to 57. Cumbernauld skips: G. Wilson won 31-11; A. Barrie lost 12-28; J. Byron won 46-4; K. Brooks won 27-14.

Whilst the gents were at Cumbernauld the senior men had to make the trip to Irvine to take on the local team.

Unfortunately they could not complete the hat trick for the club when they were unlucky to lose narrowly to Irvine by 59 shots to 62. Cumbernauld skips: J. Wilson won 17-16; J. Jamieson drew 19-19; J. Love won 14-8; T. Turnbull lost 9-19.
