Law and District AAC members celebrate club's 50th anniversary

The 50th anniversary of Law and District Amateur Athletics Club was celebrated by over 70 guests on Saturday.

New Lanark Mill Hotel was the venue for the commemorative evening, attended by club members from both yesteryear and the present day.

Club secretary Lesley McNicol organised an event which recognised the achievements of stars like Law and District legend Ian McCafferty, 5000m silver medallist at the 1970 Commonwealth Games.

“Everything went really well,” Lesley said. “It was a great night.

“This club has developed considerably over the years and now has 340 members and bases in Carluke, Wishaw and Biggar, plus a satellite base in Shotts.”

The stylish evening started with guests being piped onto the red carpet, before an opening speech by club president Bob Benyon.

Bob is the only original founder member still with the club, which these days is captained by Lesley’s 18-year-old daughter Emily.

The night’s festivities also featured a meal, dancing and a speech by former Clydesdale MSP Karen Gillon, the club president whose son James is one of the most promising young talents currently at Law and District AAC.
