The foursome, competing at the event for the first time, had not rowed before last year’s London Olympics inspired them to form a rowing club.

After a hard winter of training, the girls were ready to take on crews from across the country at Strathclyde Park.

In the school girls under 15 doubles, Elspeth Omand and Lauren Macnaughton finished second, while Elspeth Omand and Kirsty Hunter finished third in the school girls under 14 doubles final.

The crew were also joined by pupils Laura Speake and Rebecca Vest to compete in the final of the school girl under 15 coxed fours.

Lindsay Vest and Victoria Greenwood also represented the team.

Clydesdale club president Andrew McConnell told Extra Sport: “The girls faced horrendously challenging conditions on Saturday.

“In conditions where much more experienced crews were capsizing, the Williamwood squad braved the weather and did well to finish so strongly in their race.

“Up against competitors from more established rowing schools, the Williamwood doubles impressed the spectators and no doubt un-nerved their experienced opponents.
