And while the long jump wasn’t up to Emma’s usual high standard, dropping almost 150 points on what she had hoped for, she showed good maturity to pick herself up and run a solid 800m in her final event to finish sixth overall and help secure a third place prize for the GB team.

Emma said afterwards: “Combined event competitions, such as the pentathlon, are all about delivering solid performances and amassing the points as we go through the different elements.

“I was disappointed with one or two aspects of the day, particularly my long jump as it’s normally one of my best events.

“The good thing is that my coach and I can see where I can pick up the next couple of hundred points and we’ll sit down to discuss doing just that.”

Emma also thanked her parents and coach for travelling to Spain to support her.

She will now close up her winter season and is looking forward to working hard on building strength and speed for the summer season.
