Lenzie RFC clinch promotion after cracking win at Cumbernauld

IT was a date with destiny on Saturday as Lenzie RFC took on Cumbernauld – aiming to win, cement second place in the league and win promotion.

Lenzie got off to the perfect start as Brett took the kick-off and made good ground. Lenzie drove a few times and then lost the ball, but brave work by captain Morrison retrieved possession.

A couple more breenges and then McCrae fed Derrick, who did his trademark dummy and scored near the posts.

Morrison made it 8-0 thanks to a penalty by Morrison, but Cumbernauld hit back with a penalty of their own – 8-3. Lenzie edged further ahead with a penalty on 35 minutes – followed by a crunching tackle by McKenzie to snuff out a home attack.

Cumbernauld raised their game in the second half, but did not score. Lenzie were later awarded a penalty and after electing for the line-out, they duly secured possession and after a series of drives Derrick finished off a forward effort with a try – 16-3.

The home side then hit back with a number of forward drives and their pack went over for a deserved try. Lenzie did not relinquish their eight-point cushion and it finished 16-8.

The Lenzie players were generously applauded off by their opponents and the large visiting support. The coaches and players are congratulated for keeping their nerve and form after a series of setbacks.
