Lesmahagow’s Jim Meikle wins medals at lawn bowls tournament in Southern California

A TYPICAL image of bowling in America might be cartoon character Fred Flintstone playing the indoor 10 pin variety against mate Barney Rubble, but Lesmahagow’s Jim Meikle excelled at a recent outdoor lawn bowls tournament in the steaming 100 degree heat of Southern California.

Jim (37), of 16 Priory Avenue, won pairs gold and singles bronze medals when playing for Scotland at the Michael Ashton-Phillips International Bowls Challenge from October 4 to 16.

Jim, a 12-time club champion at Lesmahagow Bowling Club, said: “The high temperature out there was far too warm for me. It was very tough, because we were playing for around eight hours a day.”
