Local duo win Condorrat pairs

FORTY gents competed in Condorrat Bowling Club's annual four-bowl pairs competition on Saturday, July 31.

The gents were fortunate that there were only intermittent showers throughout the day and happily it didn't have an adverse effect on the standard of bowling, which was very high,, nor did it have any effect on the bowlers' enjoyment of the whole day.

Five pair played in four sections, playing a round robin of four games against their section opponents and one game against a pair for another section. This guaranteed each pair a minimum of 25 ends of bowls after which the winners of each section went on to play a knockout semi-final.

The semi-finalists were Bonnybridge No.1 who were against Springboig. In a game that looked to be easily going Springboig's way, Bonnybridge struck back with a five at the last to take the game into an extra end.

However, their comeback wasn't to last and the lads from Springboig regained their composure and won by two shots.

The other semi-final between Chryston No. 2 and Condorrat No.4 was every bit as tense as the first, with only one shot being scored at each of the first four ends to make it two each going into the last.

Chryston looked to have the game sewn up when they lay three bowls, strategically placed within 18 inches of the jack. However, the Condorrat skip was not to be outdone and with his last bowl he promoted one of his own bowls two feet to lie shot and game.

The final between Springboig's Archie Orr and Matt Cunningham and Condorrat's Willie Somerville and John Cowie almost felt like an anti-climax after the tension in both semis. To be fair to the four contestants, they game it their all and although the score wasn't as close as in the semis the standard of play was no less intense with Condorrat No.4 coming out the worthy winners.

This was another great day's bowling with all the participants eager to play again next year. Once again the gents owe a debt of gratitude to the ladies of the club who provided breakfast and lunch and to Coull Catering for the excellent meal at dinner time.
