Lockhart Steele wins Scottish Curling title

CARLUKE curling ace Lockhart Steele, of Castleknowe Gardens, was part of the four-man team which triumphed at the recent Scottish Seniors Curling Championships at Hamilton Ice Rink.

Lesmahagow Curling Club member Lockhart (54), showed mettle by helping his side to their third victory in recent years at the over-50s tournament, following their successes at Greenacres in 2007 and Hamilton last year.

"It was a really close final which we eventually won 6-4 after eight ends against the Kinross team skipped by David Clydesdale," Lockhart said.

"Winning the gold medal means a great deal to me.

"It was the best we have ever played and I was pleased with my contribution.

"There was a really good atmosphere at the tournament, with around 150 people watching. We had a lot of support, which is nice.

"It is definitely a feather in our caps to have won this title in three out of the past four years."

Lockhart, who played third in the team skipped by Berwick's Keith Prentice and also including Robin Aitken from East Linton and Tommy Fleming from Kelso, is now gearing up for a trip into the unknown at next month's World Senior Curling Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
