Matthew Fitt book translates Scots for ICG visitors
A PETTINAIN-based writer, English teacher and expert in Scots language has written a guidebook aimed at helping foreign visitors to the International Children’s Games, in Lanarkshire from August 3 to 8.
Matthew Fitt hopes his publication will assist those with limited knowledge of colloquial Scots, by giving definitions for several words including piece (sandwich), ginger (fizzy juice) and wean (child).
He said: “I was raised speaking Scots in Dundee and brought up with people trying to thump it out of me or humiliate me for speaking it.”
