Maxwell: Cup call off could give Rob Roy the edge

Rabs were due to face Cumnock in the third round of the cup.

However, gaffer Stewart Maxwell, pictured right, says the extra week will allow players to get more focussed and recover from injuries.

He said: “On Saturday you could have played ice hockey on the pitch. It’s just one of these things.

“It’s always disappointing not to play, but we have a couple of injuries so it gives the boys an extra week.

“We trained hard on Saturday and will be this week. We’re focussing on the game and looking forward to it.”

And Maxwell hopes that the clash will see his team get back to winning ways following their latest league loss against Pollok.

He added: “The Scottish Cup is in the pinnacle of Scottish football. To get through on Saturday would mean a Scottish Cup tie in January and bring a real buzz about the place.

“It’s a massive game, but there is no reason why we can’t do well in this competition.

“We have every chance of winning on Saturday. Cumnock are a good side and it will be a tough game.

“To get a decent cup run generates interest, crowds and finances.”

Saturday saw the club host a sportsman’s dinner at Kirkintilloch Miners Welfare Club with around 170 people attending.

Guest speakers were Scottish sports journalist Bill Leckie, former Scottish world professional sprint champion George McNeill and football agent Bill McMurdo.

There was also an auction and raffle. The successful event raised funds for the club.

Rob Roy play Cumnock on Saturday at Adamslie Park. Kick-off is at 1.45pm.
