Former Kilmarnock keeper Samson (32) replaced Connor Ripley on Saturday and – with Ripley set to end his loan spell and return to Middlesbrough this summer – Samson could be a key man for the Steelmen in the next campaign.

McGhee said: “Connor had been a wee bit ill at the beginning of the week.

“Sammy will get another game between now and the end of the season.

“We have made sure that he knows he is wanted here next year.

“Connor has been fantastic but he will go back to his home club.”
