The 17-year-old beat number 14 seed Ondrej Styler 7-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Junior Boys singles at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

McHugh got off to the perfect start by breaking Styler in the opening game, but then dropped his own serve. However another break in the fifth game restored the Bearsden teenager's advantage.

The set went with serve until McHugh served for the set at 5-4 and was broken to square things up again.

McHugh then had to save two set points when serving at 5-6 but he came through to take the set to a tiebreak which he won convincingly 7-1.

There was just a single break of serve in the second set, but crucially for the Scot it came in the sixth game to put him 4-2 up and he served out to take his place in the last eight.

McHugh next plays unseeded Australian Rinky Hijikata - the only home player left in the draw - in the quarter-finals.
