MEDAL HAUL

IN PERFECT cross-country conditions, Giffnock North AAC hosted the west district relay championships at Rouken Glen park on Saturday.

In the junior girls’ race Alex Pope raced home ninth in the under-13 leg, handing over to u-15 Chloe Cowan, whose ten-minute 18 seconds effort reeled in six opponents and launched u-17 Madeleine Murray in third.

Murray fought hard, but the Australian athlete had to settle for bronze behind Victoria Park and Kilbarchan Harriers.

Giffnock’s boys delivered two more medals for the southsiders over the same rollercoaster course.

The u-13 Dewi Gould led out the A team, pressing hard before having to accept sixth as he handed to Dougie Britton.

The u-15 runner returned in third, to send out Grant Muir, who blistered past the opposition in eight minutes 18 seconds.

Team mates Johnny Maclaughlan, Max Lancaster and Jack Walker were similarly impressive, winning another bronze for the club.

With a young A team of Luke Traynor, Greg Turner, Michael Cross and Martin Fishwick, Giffnock North earned one of the club’s best-ever final placings in the event, with sixth over the 4 by 4 K course.

Coach Croy Thompson told SportsExtra: “Given that the opposition in the senior men’s event comprises many race-hardened veterans including former national champion Bobby Quinn of Kilbarchan, the Giffnock lads’ performance promises an exciting winter’s racing over the country”.
