Medal haul for local swimmers

NORTH Lanarkshire Swim Team have reason to celebrate as they brought back an impressive haul of medals from the Scottish Gas National Short Course Championships held at Tollcross.

The team featured a number of swimmers from Tryst-based Cumbernauld Swimming Club who won medals and smashed records.

Their coach, Danny McGowan, said: "I am delighted with the continued improvement of the swimmers and I look forward to the remainder of 2010 with great optimism."

Fifteen-year-old Callum Baxter got a silver medal in the 1500 metres with a time of 16 minutes 30.45 seconds.

The girls relay team, consisting of Rochelle Callan, Hannah Coats, Leanna Marshall and Lynn Macarthur took overall bronze at 4x50m as well as the Junior gold medal. Their time of 2:01:53 set a new junior national record and club record as well.

The same team also placed fifth in the womens 4x100m relay and took the gold medal with a time of 4:03:44.

Six club records were also broken – Lynn Macarthur set new records at 50, 100 and 200 metres backstroke while Euan Alston is the club new record holder for 100m backstroke. New club records were also set for the boys 4x 100m freestyle and girls 4x50m medley. Sixteen personal best times were also recorded at this event.
