Mullen roars to victory on his London return

Newton Mearns swimmer Andrew Mullen was roared on to a golden double on National Paralympic Day.

The 18-year-old was in the London Aquatic Centre pool - where he competed in the 2012 Games - at the weekend.

And he followed up his double silver medal session in Glasgow last week to take top spot on the podium winning both the 50m and 200m S5 freestyle races.

He said he didn’t think the crowd would affect his performance but added: “When I came out for my first swim all the memories started coming back from London.”

He added: “I love racing and crowds like this make it extra special, so this will be something that I remember for the rest of my life.

“I felt a bit tired when I got here, but as soon as I arrived and warmed up and saw how busy it was, it got me so excited for racing.”

It all adds to Mullen’sconfidence as he gears up for the next Games in Brazil – where he’ll face Manual Diaz – who blocked Mullen’s route to four golds at the World championships in his home nation
