Down Memory Lane

Well insulated: As we sit fairly snugly in our modern homes, it is hard to think back to the way buildings used to be, yet within living memory there were thatched buildings in Clydesdale. This photo shows Mr J. Brough thatching cottages in Braidwood, and it is not that long since the pub in Carstairs had a thatched roof. As winter draws in, modern materials must be better!

50 YEARS AGO

n A 19-year-old woman had her birthday spoiled when the car she was travelling in collided with another car at Carluke Cross.

n It was almost standing room only in Carluke Baptist Church the previous Saturday night such was the number of people wanting to see Oscar-winning film The Unfinished Task.

n It was fun all the way for the staff at Law Hospital as the social committee of the hospital organised the annual staff dance, which took place in the Cedar Ballroom in Lanark.

n Ten youths, all under the age of 18, appeared at Lanark Police Court charged with consuming liquor. All of the youths involved were fined £5.

n Forth woman Annie Anderson retired from Messrs Porteous Bakers in Climpy Road after more than 40 years of service.

n Members of Lanark Round Table joined forces with local police officers at an informal social evening.

n Carluke schoolboy Angus Moffat was going on trial with Manchester United over the Christmas school holidays.

100 YEARS AGO

n At Lanark Sheriff Court, a farmer was accused of assaulting a man. After hearing from a number of witnesses a verdict of not proven was handed out.

n The annual communication of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Lanarkshire Upperward took place at the Clydesdale Hotel in Lanark.

n A miner, from Douglas, was found guilty at Lanark Sheriff Court of riding a bike without lights. He was fined 1s with 19s 3d expenses.

n The Law Parish Church Women’s Guild was set to hold a cake, candy and work sale to raise funds for the church. A good turnout of locals was expected.

n A huge storm which battered the country saw considerable damage inflicted on the Carluke district. Large trees were felled while chimney stacks also came loose.

n Former soldier James Campbell died at his home in Carluke aged 78. He was one of the few surviving veterans of the Crimean War.

n In a local derby match Lanark Celtic defeated Carluke Hearts 4-2.
