50 YEARS AGO

n The annual Service of Remembrance took place at the War Memorial in Carluke’s Market Square. On this occasion the service was conducted by Rev Peter Mackenzie.

n A petition signed by residents of Yieldshields, Kilncadzow and Roadmeetings was brought to the Third District Council in response to the lack of a bus service between Biggar and Carluke.

n Five men from Coatbridge were injured when their car struck a parapet on the Cleghorn Bridge. All five men were taken to Law Hospital for treatment.

n There was hope for local miners who had been made redundant by the closure of a pit in West Calder. The men were to be put forward for future employment at a pit in Bathgate.

n The death was announced of ex-Provost Alexander JJ Ross, who died aged 81 at Law Hospital.

n A truly fantastic total of £27.12s had been raised from the recent door-to-door collection in Law by the Co-operative Women’s Guild, raising money for Cancer Research.

100 YEARS AGO

n The second session of the Lanark Young Men’s Literacy and Debating Society argued over the discussion “Are We Too Much Governed.” The majority were in favour of the negative answer.

n The outrageous conduct of a lodger at the Burgh Lodging House saw a labourer fined £1, with the alternative of 10 days imprisonment, at the Burgh Police Court.

n Under the auspices of the South Lanark Liberal Association, Mr O’Mahoney, of Kerry, addressed the audience on the subject of Irish Home Rule and the Balkans.

n It was announced that the Law Co-operative Society would take over the delivery of the village’s bread which had previously been done by the Carluke Co-operative.

n A young Carluke man was killed in Oregon having emigrated their some time ago. A great degree of sympathy was extended to his mother who still lived in Kirkton Street.

n There was tragedy when a Carstairs Junction brakeman was killed when he fell across the line at Lockerbie.
