Down Memory Lane

THRIVING BUSINESS: Carluke Brickworks in 1968 was a flourishing business, which employed scores of local workers. Flash forward to 2012 and the site is now deserted, with neighbours claiming that it has now become a target for vandals and thieves who are risking life and limb in the disused premises.

50 YEARS AGO

n Almost 500 exhibits were on view at the Upperward of Lanarkshire Bird Society open show at Carluke’s Drill Hall.

n Law Hospital nurse Georgina Forbes received the Janet McIntosh Memorial Medal at the nurses’ annual prizegiving.

n A male skull believed to be over 50 years old was unearthed by workmen excavating at Sunnyside Lodge in Nemphlar.

n Mr WH Beale, prospective Unionist candidate for Lanark, was the guest of Sir Robert and Lady Erskine-Hill at a recital given by John Ogdon.

n A Lanark Round Table meeting had as its guest speaker Dr JB Pettigrew, acting Medical Superintendent of Law Hospital.

n A 58-year-old man, of Unitas Crescent, Carluke, was taken to Law Hospital with head injuries after being hit by a car as he crossed Hamilton Street.

n Goals by McKinstray (3), Logan (2), J Martin, Waugh and Crawford helped Carluke Rovers to an eight-goal win over Ardeer Thistle at Loch Park.

100 YEARS AGO

n An additional water supply of 120 gallons per hour was expected following boring operations, providing a supplementary supply at Lanark’s Bellfield Sanatorium.

n A labourer was fined seven shillings six pence, with the alternative of five days in prison, at Lanark Police Court. He was found guilty of being drunk and incapable in Hope Street, Lanark, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

n The seven candidates in the Lanark Town Council elections would go to the polls the following Tuesday in the battle for five seats in the authority.

n There was a large turnout of shows and stalls in Carluke’s Market Place for the town’s October Fair Day.

n Carluke’s EU Church was the venue that Friday for a speech by Mr JB Grant, a missionary in China.

n Sinking operations in connection with a new colliery at Law were started by Messrs Wilsons and Clyde Coal Company in a field in Lawmuir Farm.

n A harriers team was to be formed at Lanark Amateur Athletics Club.
