Smashing image: This dramatic photograph taken at the former Thankerton Station on August 10,1912 proves that the so-called Golden Age of Steam wasn’t without its problems. This accident was just one of many on the railways in the days before modern safety devices and the general improvements brought about by the creation of the nationalised British Railways just over thirty years after this incident.

n The latest census showed that the population of Carluke was 11,900 and the population of Lanark was 8366.

n Mr David B Adamson, BSc, assistant teacher at Lanark Grammar School, was appointed principal teacher of maths at Biggar High School.

n Police Superintendent James Aitchison of Lanark Constabulary assured Lanark Town Council that everything possible would be done to avoid the annoyances caused to townsfolk by street photographers.

n Tenants of the 45,000 houses owned by Lanark Town Council were faced with a 3s 1d per week rent increase from May 16.

n The carol singers who toured Forth during the Christmas week had collected £18.16.0, which was being forwarded to the treasurer of Church of Scotland Aid To Refugees Fund.

n The District Council office at Carluke was to get, as replacements for obsolete desks and stools, a double pedestal desk, typist table and two typist chairs, at a cost of £45.11.2d.

n A Lesmahagow father and son were found guilty at Lanark Sheriff Court of day poaching at Brokencross Moor, 50 yards from Carlisle Road, on December 3. They were fined 10s with £1 4s 6d of costs.

n The roof at Bloomgate UF Church in Lanark caught fire during the Sunday service, after a piece of zinc covering a hole at the bend of the furnace chimney melted and the sarking caught fire. No-one was injured.

n Tomato growing was flourishing in Braidwood, with a number of new glass houses being erected.

n Thomas Train of Carnwath Road received the English gold medal at Carluke Higher Grade School from Mrs Lockhart of Milton-Lockhart.

n The respective Territorial and Civilian prizes at a shooting competition on the miniature rifle range at Carluke District Hall were won by Lance Corporal James Gilchrist and Thomas Wylie.

n At a Carluke Parish Council meeting, a proposal was put forward to name the streets and number the houses in the Law district.
