Wide clyde: A scene from our local stretch of the mighty river from the early part of the last century, proving that there was flooding on it long before the phrase `global warming’ was ever heard of. There are warnings that such scenes could become even more commonplace should quarrying plans, opposed by pressure group CRAG, go ahead.

50 YEARS AGO

n At Lanark Presbytery the Temperance and Morals Committee hit out at the low moral standards of the present day and condemned commercial exploitation.

n A door-to-door collection by members of Law Co-operative Society, in aid of the Cancer Research Fund, amounted to £22.

n Speaking at a Labour Party social gathering in Carluke local MP Judith Hart stated that the economic measures, introduced by the Government presented the greatest challenge to the Scottish economy.

n In the worst pre-Christmas weather for many years, traffic in many parts of Clydesdale came to a standstill. The approach road to Lanark meant heavy goods vehicles were unable to climb the hill.

n Carluke Railway Station was broken into during the night. Both the heavy goods department and the passenger offices were ransacked but it was not clear how much was taken.

n Lanark man Mr R.B Dick led his rink, from Glasgow, to victory in the World Curling Championship final, held at Haymarket ice rink.

100 YEARS AGO

n The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs H Murphy was quietly celebrated. The event saw the couple’s three sons came back to Lanark.

n The well known evangelist Mr Alfred Mace, who had been preaching the Gospel for the past 30 years in Britain and America, was conducting meetings in Carluke Gospel Hall.

n Much sorrow was felt in Carluke over the death of engineer Mr William Bell, who was fatally injured while working at a steel mill in Cardiff.

n Mr J. Safely, Jewellers had all the Christmas gifts sorted. The Carluke High Street jeweller sold watches, clocks, jewellery and silver plates at low prices.

n At a meeting of Lanark Presbytery elders discussed the proposed new church, at Tarbrax. The manager of Tarbrax Ironworks donated £50 to the cause.

n At the Carluke School Board meeting a typewritten copy of the rules on corporal punishment was to be agreed by all of the headmasters of local schools.

n Carluke Milton Rovers beat Earnock Rovers 3-0 in the Lanarkshire League.
