Lost and found: The Lanark police have quite wisely appealed to the Gazette’s readers to turn detective to solve the mystery behind this photograph of a mother and child, with a separate photo of what might be the mum or another female member of the same family, recently turned into them after being found lying in the town’s Cleghorn Road. 50 YEARS AGO

n Carluke Co-operative Women’s Guild held its annual social evening in the Holyoake Tearooms. Mrs Dick, the new president, welcomed everyone.

n Rev W.G Limond was set to take his first service at St Leonard’s Church in Lanark since taking ill with coronary thrombosis in April.

n Principal oboe player in the Queen’s Hall Orchestra Leon Goosens was coming to Lanark for a concert on October 10. It was said to be highly anticipated by Lanarkians.

n Shop raiders grabbed £600 worth of cigarettes from a tobacconist shop in Biggar. The thieves also stole a van from a nearby mechanics and loaded the cigarettes into it.

n Carluke High pupil Alistair McDougall appeared twice on American television during his eight week holiday where he went out to visit his grandmother.

n A 17-year-old labourer was warned at Lanark Sheriff Court that his persistent habit of stealing pedal cycles would result in him being sent to borstal.

n Carluke Rovers welcomed back Martin Murphy who had left to work in England.

100 YEARS AGO

n There were only two crimes reported at the recent race meeting at Lanark Racecourse. One such case involved one man who had been grooming a horse and when it won he decided to have too much to drink and was taken into custody by police.

n A father, mother and daughter were charged with assaulting a neighbour. Both the father and daughters received verdicts of not proven against them however, the mother was found guilty and received a fine of £1.

n A young man, from Glasgow, died after he fell 60 feet at Bonnington Falls. The accident happened on a day when hundreds of Glaswegians came to Lanark as part of the Autumn holiday.

n Law man Robert Rogerson, who played for Law Hearts FC, was celebrating having signed for Hibernian FC. He made his debut against Raith Rovers.

n There was finally an agreement reached in the dispute at Hyndford Colliery. It was said that the men thought the settlement was favourable to them.
