Down Memory Lane

vBiggar HIGH: Edouard Dunnachie of Kaimend sent in this photograph of the staff at Biggar High School round about 1974. Some of them he can remember from his own time there, and the faces he can recall include Mr J.Steele, Bobby Boyd, Mr Dave Anderson, Miss Heather Watt, Mr Williamson, Miss Jean McGregor, Mr Kelly, Mr Tam Muat, Mr John Forrest and Mr Angus Mathieson  - although he does not recall the others, who may have been after his time of 1966-68. No doubt it will bring back many memories for former pupils of the school. 50 YEARS AGO

n A Carluke labourer was sentenced twice in one day after admitting two assaults. Honorary Sheriff Russell said that he had a deplorable record.

n The Third District Council decided to protest against the Central SMT proposal to withdraw its 8.40pm Carluke to Glasgow service on Saturdays.

n Carluke man Alex Wilson was celebrating after winning a snooker tournament at the Butlins Holiday Camp in Clacton. He took home a trophy worth £100.

n Lanark Town Council considered cornering off a new block of five homes at Braxfield Terrace and cutting new entrances after complaints that children had been creating a disturbing amount of noise.

n Rev Russell Brown of Lanark Old Parish Church conducted the Sunday service at Crathie Church. He had been a guest of the Queen at Balmoral Castle over the weekend.

n Lanark MP Judith Hart said that it would be a disaster if Britain joined the Common Market.

1100 YEARS AGO

n Lanark Choral and Orchestral Society decided on another rendering of Handel’s Messiah for its next concert. It had put on an excellent rendition of it the previous year.

n A man, from Lanark, was accused of assaulting his own mother by punching her. He pleaded not guilty but the Magistrate put bail at £5.

n Two labourers pleaded not guilty to a charge of night poaching following an incident at Littleholm Field on Prettahill Farm.

n Mr W.H McEwen, principal of the Lanark School of Flying, was presented with a massive silver trophy in recognition of his recent flight across the Firth of Forth.

n In Carluke Gospel Hall there was a Sunday service where the parishioners were entertained by a variety performance by young men from Larkhall.

n There was still no agreement regarding the dispute at Hyndshaw Colliery. However, it was agreed that the men would return to work for two days before going back on strike.
