Down Memory Lane

Emergency service: The Carluke St Andrew’s First Aid company will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year – but there was an earlier organisation. This picture of the Carluke and District Ambulance Corps, posing with their stretchers, was taken around 1914. The picture was given to Ian Paterson of the modern organisation, but he knows nothing about the older group or how long it existed.

50 YEARS AGO

n A revolver handed in brought the number of firearms surrendered to police in Lanarkshire under an amnesty to 100.

n Lanark Town Council fixed their rates at 15/6 in the £1 – a reduction of 3/6d.

n A company director was fined £5 at Lanark Sheriff Court for careless driving on Lanark’s Stanmore road-end.

n A Carstairs Junction woman was fined £3 at Lanark Sheriff Court for stealing from the electric prepayment meter in her own home. She had repaid the money.

n Pupils of Forth Secondary School made a door-to-door collection on behalf of the Scottish Children’s League of Pity and raised £9.17.7d.

n Carluke Rovers transfer listed Lachlan Short at his own request. He had played only one game since the season started.

n A miner who became addicted to a particular cough mixture was fined £5 at Lanark Sheriff Court for stealing 24 fluid ounces of it from two Douglas doctors.

n Mrs Judith Hart, MP for Lanark, returned home from a trip to Russia with four other MPs.

100 YEARS AGO

n A labourer pleaded guilty at Lanark Burgh Court to being disorderly while drunk in Wellgate on Saturday night. The man, who had 10 previous convictions for similar offences, was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment.

n There was a fire outbreak at the premises of Lanark engineer and millright Andrew Wilson of Ladyacre Road. The blaze, caused by a leakage of gas ignited by the sun’s rays coming through a window, caused £30 of damage.

n To compensate for the scarcity of water in Law reservoir, a connection was established between the Wishaw and Law Mains near Belstane Farm, Carluke.

n Viola grower John Johnstone, of Law, was awarded second for 48 violas, distinct varieties, at the National Flower Show in marquees in the grounds of the Scottish National Exhibition, Kelvingrove Park.

n After an open competition, Carluke’s Fiona Clark won a free violin playing scholarship at the Athenaeum School of Music in Glasgow.
