Wee School remembered: The photo of the Carluke Wee School class of ‘53 brought back memories for Grace Blackie and her husband Ian. They moved to Sydney, Australia, 40 years ago, but visit Carluke frequently and still keep an interest in the town. They have sent this photo of the ‘Wee School’ - Carluke Primary - football team around 1958, which lost 4-1 to Crawforddyke in the Hunter Cup. the team members were Back row ??, ??, Ian Blackie, Jack Thompson, ??,??,??; Front Row:??,??,??, Sandy Young, Forrest Cuthbert, Tom Nicol. Not shown was the coach Mr Fowler who doubled as the school janitor. And Grace’s memory tells her that Jack Thompson was the son of the headmaster of Crawfordyke!

50 YEARS AGO

n Two brothers Michael and James Glen were the favourites for the Red Hose Race in Carnwath - as they were the only two entrants. In the end elder brother Michael won the race for the tenth time.

n Carluke man David Keir was getting ready to assume his position as the new principal probation officer for Lanarkshire. Mr Keir was taking over from Cambuslang man J.B Hamilton VC.

n Ex councillor William MacLachlan was injured when he was thrown from his car in Carnwath Road in Carluke. He sustained concussion and was taken to Law Hospital for treatment.

n Lanark MP Judith Hart was visiting Russia with three other MPs. During her visit she was to be involved with the BBC and undertake a series of interviews.

n The Cameronians were set to take part in a Service of Rememberance at the regimental war memorial in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow.

n Two Lesmahagow boys were convicted of stealing a bicycle from a local farm. Sheriff H.S Wilson sentenced both to 14 days detention.

100 YEARS AGO

n Drama enthusiasts in Lanark met in the Clydesdale Hotel to see if there was a possibility of reviving an amateur dramatic club in the Royal Burgh.

n A woman suffered injuries to her right knee after an accident at Lanark train Station. The woman was knocked over by a loaded barrow and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

n At Lanark Burgh Court a woman was found guilty of being drunk, behaving in a disorderly manner and using obscene language. She was fined £1 with the alternative of 10 days imprisonment.

n Lanark man John Currie continued to reminisce about the Royal Burgh in the 1850s for his ‘Lanark - 60 years ago’ feature in the Gazette.

n Carnwath’s Red Hose Race as well as its cattle and flower shows took place on the same day. The winner of the famous red socks was F.W Day, from Rainham.

n Members of Kirkton U.F Church in Carluke enjoyed a day out on the Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond. A total of 35 people made the trip in the sunshine.
