50 YEARS AGO

n Seventeen-year-old apprentice electrician Brian Yule, of 28 Eastfield Road, Carluke, was detained in Law Hospital with a suspected fractured skull after a rear tyre on his motor car blew out and threw him from the vehicle to the ground.

n Detective Sergeant J Anderson (Lanark) won the Lanarkshire County and Burghs Police Golf Championship at Hamilton, with rounds of 80 and 73 for a 153 total.

n Thieves broke into Porteous’s bakehouse in Forth, and stole three steak pies. They got in by breaking a side window.

n Miss Clara R Kay, assistant teacher at New Lanark Primary School, was nominated to attend a course for teachers of handicapped children at Jordanhill College from October 2 to January 31.

n Jim Thomson (17), of Lilybank, Victoria Avenue, Carluke, had a hole-in-one at the 17th in a matchplay competition at Carluke Golf Club.

n Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons were starring in The Grass Is Greener, screened at Lanark’s Regal Cinema.

100 YEARS AGO

n A woman pleaded guilty at Lanark Sheriff Court, before Hon. Sheriff Substitute Vassie, to having shouted and bawled at the top of Wallgreen, Carluke. She was fined £1 with the alternative of 10 days’ imprisonment.

n At Lanark JP Court, a labourer admitted being disorderly while drunk by shouting, swearing and attempting to trip up Constable Russell, Carstairs, near Huntlygate Farm on the road between Lanark and Carstairs. He was fined £1 with the alternative of 20 days’ imprisonment.

n Lanark Bowling Club players won five out of five individual matches against their Glasgow BC opponents, sealing a 151-63 aggregate victory to clinch the Sir John Watson Cup.

n The first consignment of plums from Braidwood left the station for Glasgow Market.

n After 35 years with the Lanarkshire Constabulary, Carnwath Sergeant John McLuckie was presented with a purse of sovereigns and a gold mounted walking stick from friends and admirers at a leaving do in the Old Bush Inn and Hotel.
