Down Memory Lane

Our picture shows past players from Douglas West’s Junior Football Club in the early 20th century when just about every community in Clydesdale, no matter how small, boasted its own team. Sadly, in many cases, not only have these once well-supported clubs disappeared but even the very villages they represented, Douglas West now being one of these ‘ghost towns’.

50 YEARS AGO

* Lanark County Council were to build 84 new homes at Burnwood Camp. The houses were to be a mix of two storey semi detached and terraced.

* Sheena Scott, a 21-year-old from Lanark, appeared on STVs Here and Now programme. She was spotted by STV after starring in Carluke Amateur Operatic Society’s show the New Moon.

* Kirkstyle Churches annual social evening for its congregation was once again a sell out. After tea a musical programme, from mostly Gilbert and Sullivan operas, were performed.

* Carluke man A.C Macdonald was honoured by staff at the Prudential Union at their most recent meeting in Perth. Mr Macdonald was also given a clock as a small token of the staff’s appreciation.

* A Lanark county councillor hit out at the Whuppity Scoorie. Andrew Yuill said that the event was a shambles and that children just grabbed the money out of folks’ hands.

* John Cumming was becoming a regular at the coaching sessions of Carluke Dynamo Y.C. ‘Darkie’ also agreed to referee the final of the club’s upcoming five-a-side.

100 YEARS AGO

* The opening of the Bloomgate Church Hall was to take place with Mrs Findlay of Bonnington offically opening it. A commemoration service was to be held on March 5.

* The New Lanark evening school social was held with over 60 people taking part. Dances and games followed after the opening by Parish Councillor McCartney.

* Under the auspices of the Royal National Mission of Deep Sea Fisherman Mr Stein and Mr Macdonald, two North Sea skippers, gave a lecture at Kirkfield Memorial Hall on their work dangers.

* At Lanark Sheriff Court two youths, from Tarbrax, were found guilty of breaking into a shop in Forth and stealing 100 packs of cigarettes. The Sheriff imposed a fine of 10s each.

* Cheap novels by Nat Gold, shoes from Alex Auld and corsets from Brownlees drapery warehouse were just some of the items that were advertised in the Gazette that weekend.

* Law Volunteers faced Burnbank Athletic in the Lanarkshire League with Law winning 1-0. The goal was scored by MacDougall.
