50 YEARS AGO

* Father Patrick Lynch returned to Carluke as a guest with parishioners of St Athanasius. Warm tributes were paid to him for the good work he had done helping patients at Law Hospital.

* Carluke man Matt McKenzie was trying his luck in the entertainment world. He was due to appear in the City Variety Theatre in Leeds.

* Four bungalows in Carluke, Braidwood and Law were broken into. It was understood entry was made in all cases through the windows.

* Fiscal W.E Hall said that dance hall disturbances outside Lanark Memorial Hall were far too frequent. This followed the case of two men who were fined 10 after they pled guilty to a breach of the peace outside the hall.

* Coalburn Parish Church had a former miner as its minister, Rev Bryan Cross.

* Lanark Town Council accepted an offer of 144 for fallen timber from a timber merchants in Airdrie.

* Lanark serviceman Jack Fleming was set to compete in the British and Commonwealth Forces Championships in Melbourne as captain of the RAF badminton team.

100 YEARS AGO

* A number of shops in Lanark agreed to hold a Christmas Bazaar. The Gazette reported that the bazaar would be worth the visit.

* Members of the Select Choir were getting set to perform Handels Messiah in the New Year. Mr Tom Brown would conduct while Mr Robert Climis was to play the piano.

* A Royal Warrant of Appointment was appointed by King George V to well known local firm Humber Ltd. The company manufactured parts for motor cars.

* A fradulent canvasser who tried to scam money from residents in Carluke and Law was found guilty at Lanark Sheriff Court and ordered to pay 3 3s.

* A benefit concert was held in Law in aid of Mr William Gilroy who lost his foot in an accident. The concert received huge support from the public.

* The Rev John Mitchell, formerly of Carluke, was ordained as minister of the Trinity Presbyterian Church of England in London.

* Carluke Milton Rovers faced Dechmont Hearts in a replayed tie of the Lanarkshire Cup. Dechmont won an exciting game 3-1.
