50 YEARS AGO

* Carluke Amateur Operatic Society held their show The New Moon. The show provided sunshine, laughter, gaiety and a touch of sadness.

* An assurance that Law Hospital would not be closed was given – until at least two new hospitals were built in the county. One was to be built in Airdrie or Coatbridge with a second being built in Motherwell.

* The total Poppy Day collection in Law amounted to 75.6.5d, which included 56 from the hospital. The convener Mrs Tweedie thanked everyone for their contribution.

* Three generations of railway service came to an end when local man Charles Attwell retired. He was presented with a fireside chair as he

completed his final shift.

* Former Vice Leiutenant of the county Major J.B.L Monteith died aged 82. As a member of the Third District Council, Major Monteith was responsible for the building of Monteith Park in Carstairs Junction.

* Ex-police inspector W Anderson was appointed a bailie to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr J Boyd.

* An unemployed woman with no fixed residence was fined 1 with the alternative of 10 days imprisonment for being drunk and behaving in a disorderly manner. She had only been released from jail the previous day.

* A Lanark labourer was charged at Lanark Sheriff Court for failing to provide his son with efficent elementary education. He was fined 10s with the alternative of three days imprisonment.

* An otter was caught in the Clyde, near Crossford. The animal, which was fast becoming extinct, was said to be one of the finest specimens of its kind.

* In Carluke a horse and cart went straight through the shop window of a chemist's. The horse was uninjured but the large glass window was totally destroyed.

* Well-known Carluke man Hugh Delaney left the town to start a new life in America. A well known Christian, Mr Delaney was set to leave at the end of the week.

* Local draper Richard Dick & Son was said to be offering exceptional value in blankets according to his advert in the Gazette.
