50 YEARS AGO

* A suspected foot and mouth case was reported in Carluke, which followed a confirmed case in Biggar. Lanark, Biggar and Peebles Foal Society cancelled its show at Lanark Auction Market because of the outbreak.

* A Carluke housewife was fined 10 at Lanark Sheriff Court for driving a car without due care and attention. The car collided with a lorry at the junction of Hamilton Street and High Street.

* Remembrance services were held in Lanark and Carluke. Carluke's parade was the biggest in years while the theme in Lanark was 'freedom'.

* A plebiscite was to be taken to assess the level of support among rate payers for an indoor Lanark baths. The step was agreed by Lanark Town Council on the casting vote of Provost Millar Stoddart.

* A railway porter pleaded guilty to stealing 70 worth of goods from a wagon at Carstairs Junction Station. He was jailed for 60 days.

* Bailie James Boyd intimated his resignation from Lanark Town Council. He said that his business interests meant he was away from home a great deal.

* Former Lanark Grammar pupil Mr William Barr was 'capped' by Glasgow University having passed all his examinations with distinction. He was to become a doctor.

* The time expired for lodging nominations for membership for the Landward Division of the Lanark Parish Council. It was found that no more than the necessary number of people had been nominated.

* Mr James Gillies, secretary of the Scottish Temperance League, was to address a meeting in Lanark over the weekend. Mr Gillies was one of the most sought after speakers in the country.

* In Law President of the Scottish Miners Federation Mr Robert Smillie addressed a meeting in the Wilson Hall.

* The Gazette ran a feature on the distinguished people who had visited Lanark. Among them were Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and Oliver Cromwell.

* Law Volunteers played out an entertaining game against Strathaven YMCA. Law won the game 3-2.

* A Carluke chemist advertised a product guaranteed to make your hair grow...or he would refund the money!
