* Seventeen people had been killed on the roads of

Lanarkshire the previous month - the county's bleakest ever September.

* Married quarters costing 4500 were to be provided for junior medical staff at Law Hospital, by converting a wing of the nurses' home.

* The Blackface shearling lamb shown by Mr Hamilton of Lanark fetched the top sale price of 1300 at Stirling.

* Two 13-year-old boys who broke into a builder's office at Thankerton, then a bowling hut at Abington were placed on two years probation.

* After 34 years in practice, mostly in Lanark, Dr Thomas Watson Banks retired.

* Constable Jas. Allan, who had been on his way to investigate a road crash near Biggar, was involved in one himself when his van skidded and overturned 200 yards from the scene of the crash. * Forth Wanderers enjoyed a glorious 2-1 home win over Shettleston in the first round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

* Carluke Rovers winger George Lindsay was called up by Motherwell, having been signed in August a few days after his 17th birthday.

100 YEARS AGO

* The Lanark house occupied by Mrs Leggat of Castlegate caught fire, with the apparent source being a quantity of sticks in the cellar. The fire brigade tried to extinguish the flames before serious damage was done.

* Two male accused were each fined 10s at Lanark Burgh Court after being found guilty of cursing, swearing, quarrelling and fighting with each other at the Horse Market in Whitelees Road on October 1.

* Two miners caught with a bag containing 12 rabbits, at the public road near the entrance to the Lake Pavilion on September 1, were found guilty of poaching. They were each fined 1 3s.

* A 47 guinea piano was available to buy for 6d from Mitchell's Music Shop, 84 Main Street, Wishaw.

* Carluke Choral and Orchestral Union had its first practice in the Lesser Town Hall the following Monday.

* Value for money home furnishing was available from Robert Arnott Cabinetmaker, Clyde Street, Carluke.

* Braidwood Celtic juvenile football team beat New Lanark 4-3 in a friendly match at the Celtic Park in Braidwood.
