50 YEARS AGO

* A service of dedication took place at Kirkstyle Church upon the impending departure of Miss Betty Malone. Miss Malone was set to work with the Mission Field in India.

* A 72-year-old man was given the chance to clear out of the district after committing a breach of the peace in Carluke. He was admonished on the understanding he would go to live with his son in Ayrshire.

* Despite miserable weather the Carluke Dog Training Club attracted a good crowd to its display in Market Square. The principal demonstrator was Mr Allan with his dog Jet.

* The water shortage in Lanark was over after restrictions had been in place for three months. * A 38-year-old miner pled guilty to driving a friend's car while under the influence of drink. He was banned from driving for 12 months and fined 15.

* General Sir Thomas Riddell-Webster inspected the last passing out parade of National Serviceman at Winston Barracks; 41 men passed out.

* Carluke Rovers wing half Lauchie Short was suspended by the Scottish Junior FA for two months for signing for two clubs within one season.

* During the weekend there was a rendezvous of the Executive of the Burns Federation in Lanark. The federation was entertained by the local Burns club with a good night being had by all.

* An Irish labourer was charged with having been drunk in Lanark High Street and challenging people to a fight. Bailie Morton fined him 15s.

* An unemployed man came before Lanark Sheriff Court charged with stealing a jacket, pipe, knife and cigarettes from a house in Braxfield Road. The charge was found not proven.

* The annual exhibition of the Law Floral and Horticultural Society took place at Wilson Hall. There was a fine display in the cut flower contest.

* At Columbie Park the annual Carstairs athletics games took place. The popularity of the games was shown to be more popular than ever with

competitions ranging from high jump to wrestling.

* Several model yachts lined up at Lanark Loch with the prize being provided by Mr John Bryce. Mr Anderson's yacht Corra Linn was the winner.

* An exciting 3-3 draw was played out by Corehouse Thistle and Lanark Celtic.
