50 YEARS AGO

* Mrs Margaret Pringle, of Mayfield, Biggar, received a telegram from the Queen to mark her 100th birthday.

* At the Lanark lamb sales, 18,424 Blackface wedder lambs averaged 87/9d, a rise of 12/2d on the previous year's prices.

* Lawrie and Symington's grading centre at Lanark Auction Market was to be opened to the public from September 5 to 10. It was part of the British Egg Marketing Board's Scottish Week.

* Constable John Baker of Carluke was in the Scottish AAA team which competed in the Northern Ireland Highland Games in Belfast.

* Litter baskets, like those at Lanark Loch, were to be placed between eight seats in Delves Park, Lanark, and refuse bins near the toilets when picnics were being held in the park.

* Lanark cricketer George Timson scored a century for the first time in 14 years, in a match against Glasgow side Collins. His century was the first hit by a Lanark batsman since J Johnstone scored a ton against Kilmarnock in 1946.

* Carluke's Billy Gibb, a chartered accountant, had a hole in one at the 120-yard third hole at Carnwath Golf Club.

100 YEARS AGO

* A fish hawker was charged at Lanark Burgh Court with

having behaved in a disorderly manner while drunk in his home. He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty by Bailie Lamb and sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment.

* A railway porter slipped underneath a stove and broke his left leg when a lorry's delivery horse moved forward as he unloaded equipment at Lanark Train Station. He also sustained a severe wound on the back of his head.

* The Rev James Robertson, of Edinburgh, who was best known as the 'Singing Minister', had agreed to open Forth and Wilsontown Flower Show.

* Mr R Vassie's 'Lemberg' won Lanark Model Yacht Club's race on Lanark Loch, doing the distance in 32 minutes.

* On the grounds of unfair refereeing, football team Law Volunteers refused to play the last eight minutes of a Lanarkshire League game they were losing 3-2 at Ashgill Rovers.

* To mark the start of the football season, Lanark Albion FC members were to have "a trip on the light fantastic toe", in Shand's Hall that Friday.
