50 YEARS AGO

* Former Grand Master of the Orange Lodge of Scotland, the Rev Alan Hasson, of Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, preached in Law Church for the first time since a long illness.

* The matron of Lanark's William Smellie Maternity Hospital was to attend an international convention of midwives in Rome in October.

* William Barclay, a 46-year-old slater of Clyde Street, Carluke, was in Law Hospital with a fractured skull having fallen 25ft from a ladder inside Motherwell's Rex Cinema.

* Mr McCulloch of Callender took up his new duties as postmaster at Carluke, in succession to the late Mr McDonald.

* A 25-year-old soldier was convicted of desertion and sentenced to six months detention by a district court martial at Lanark. The Cameronians man missed an overseas visit, which he blamed on recurring headaches.

* Carluke Rovers were top of the Lanarkshire League after winning their first three games.

* On their trip to the Lake District, Lanark and District Young Farmers Club made a stop on their homeward journey at the Blacksmith's Shop at Gretna Green.

* Well known Carluke High Street watchmaker and jeweller John Safely sustained serious injuries when he fell getting off a train as it arrived in Edinburgh.

* Carluke's Parish SS Church was organising an excursion to Strathaven.

* The grouse shooting season opened over the Lanarkshire moors under a dull sky.

* Mr J Johnstone of Law received a handsome silver medal when his violas won the 24 blooms section at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Pansy and Viola Show.

* At the AGM of Carluke's Wilberforce Dramatic Club, it was agreed that members would undertake their own production of the well known Alexandre Dumas drama The Three Musketeers.

* Blousewear at popular prices was available from Carluke High Street draper Alexander Balsillie.

* A leading line of drill shirts, costing 2s 9d each, was available from Alex Ross and Co, Castlegate, Lanark.

* Thirty employees of Carluke High Street cabinetmakers Messrs John Graham and Sons had their annual excursion to Rothesay.
