50 YEARS AGO

* The Third District Council wanted a showdown with dustmen after being inundated with complaints. And a Braidwood householder complained that his wife had been frightened by the obscenities used by the men.

* A total of five authorities were to attend a meeting to find out the fate of Law Hospital. Reports that two new hospitals were to be built in Coatbridge and Motherwell were denied.

* Mrs May Murdoch, of the mid Lanark centre for Girl Guiding, thanked the Third District Council for their floral display, which commenced the organisation's Diamond Jubilee.

* A 30-year-old plasterer fell 30 feet from Fiddlers Bridge and was taken to Law Hospital for observation, where he sat up dazed but uninjured.

* A fire at Hallcraig golf course was said to stink from a mile away. Councillor William Maclachlan had seen the fire on three successive Sundays.

* Youngsters were making a cycle track out of the footpaths in Forth recreational ground.

* Golfer Burns Yuill won the Newlands Golf Club Trophy with rounds of 72 and 70.

100 YEARS AGO

* A meeting of Lanark UF Presbytery was held with Rev Peter Walker presiding.

* A children's gala was organised in Carstairs. Headed by pipers Cameron and Stewart the traditional games and sports were held.

* A church parade was held for B Company (Lanark) of the eighth Battalion of Highland Light Infantry. The 90 strong company was under the command of Captain Douglas Clark.

* The Burgh Court heard a farm worker plead guilty to being in a state of intoxication and incapable of looking after herself. She was fined 10s for her efforts.

* Two labourers were found guilty of fighting with each other in Lanark High Street. One was fined 15s, with the alternative of 10 days

imprisonment while the other was fined 10s.

* A jumble sale was held under the auspices of St Athanasius Church in Carluke. During the course of the day the sale managed to raise a total of 80.

* During a match between Carluke Hearts and Craignethan Thistle, young Thistle half back Robert Forrest had his leg broken.
