50 YEARS AGO

* Carluke's new 30,000 Post Office in Kirkton Street was formally opened by Mrs Janet MacLachlan. Head postmaster Mr D Davidson made a speech.

* Scotland footballer Ian St John and England international Joe Baker were invited to judge the Carluke Rovers 1960 Sports Queen. The queen competition was to be held at the pre-sports dance on June 17.

* The annual crowning of the Heather Queen in Forth was to take place on June 18. Queen Agnes Simpson was to be crowned by last year's queen Miss Margaret Moffat.

* A steel erector from Blantyre was found guilty, at Lanark Sheriff Court, after stealing 12 bottles of whisky from a pub in Braidwood and fined 5.

* The Livingstone School of Dance held its annual dance display in Carluke Town Hall. 60 was raised for the Royal Blind Asylum of Scotland.

* Lanark Cricket Club registered an easy win at Linlithgow. The home side were bowled out for just 57 and Lanark made the score with the loss of just five wickets.

* Carluke referee Jimmy Ferguson was to referee three cup finals and one semi-final in the space of eight days.

100 YEARS AGO

* Biggar was saddened to learn of the death of Colonel James Dennistoun Mitchell. The Colonel had served the army in a number of campaigns.

* With only a few days to go to go until the 1910 Lanimer Day, preparations were in full swing. Photographs of the Lanimer Queen and Lord Cornet were to be included in the event's programme.

* Carstairs schoolmaster Mr James Delday was honoured at the annual meeting of the Lanark branch of the Educational Institute. Mr Delday was the outgoing president of the organisation.

* A miner was working in the Shawfield Pit when two pieces of coal fell away from the roof and struck him on the back and the head. He suffered bruising and internal injuries.

* The people of Braidwood bid farewell to Peter Nesbit who was leaving for Salt Lake City. He was given a purse of sovereigns at the presentation.

* A dispute arose in the Castlehill Collieries between workers and management due to the increased distance the coals had to be drawn.

* Carluke Milton Rovers faced Newton Villa in the Lanark-shire League, winnig 3-1.
