50 YEARS AGO

* County councillor W McLachlan made reference to the derelict condition of the land around Castlehill Colliery. He also drew attention to other sites closed locally by the National Coal Board.

* A 26-year-old labourer was fined 10 at Lanark Sheriff Court after he was convicted of attacking a fish restaurant owner on Boxing Night.

* Provost J Millar Stoddart was set to open a five day electricity exhibition. The exhibition was to show all the latest heating and household appliances by prominent manufacturers.

* A 16-year-old girl from Forth had her left leg badly fractured when it was crushed against a car as she was riding pillion on a motorcycle.

* A total of 100 old folk from Lanarkshire including those from Crosslaw in Lanark were to be given a seaside holiday. 24 pensioners from Crosslaw were heading to Dunoon.

* Carstairs Junction Gala Queen was to be Jean Graham. In Douglas, Margaret Crawford was chosen as Gala Queen.

* Forth Wanderers qualified for their second cup final of the season after they beat Douglaswater Thistle in the Hozier Cup semi-final.

100 YEARS AGO

* A united memorial service was held in Carluke Parish Church following the death of King Edward VII. Prayer was offered during the service by the Rev Donald Mackintosh.

* At Lanark Burgh Court a miner was charged with having behaved in a disorderly manner in the Wellgate. After being described as a nuisance he was given a 10s fine.

* Lanark Military Band gave a programme of classical and popular music at the cross under the conductorship of bandmaster R.M Yeatte.

* Two women were injured in separate incidents while riding their bikes on the West Calder to Forth road. One dislocated her shoulder while another fractured her right leg.

* Considerable alarm was raised in Crossford after a horse attached to a bakers van ran through the village at great speed. No-one was injured.

* A woman said to Provost Macleary at Lanark Burgh Court that she would never bother him again after being found drunk on a Saturday evening. She was fined 7s.

* An angry spectator contacted the Gazette to show his disgust after apparent rowdiness at football matches.
