50 YEARS AGO

* A 24-year-old farm worker who damaged three cars and stated he had lost control due to drink was fined 17 at Lanark Sheriff Court. The

damage was estimated at 40.

* The Department of Health asked Lanark Town Council for information regarding the replacement of pre-fabs in the Royal Burgh. The department wanted to know the number of houses required to re-house people with unfit properties.

* The 1960 Lanimer Queen was chosen with New Lanark Primary pupil Elizabeth Frood given the honour by her schoolmates. Five years earlier her sister Lorna was queen.

* Carnwath girl Christine McColm had tea with the Duke of Edinburgh at the Usher Hall.

* Biggar man Thomas Johnstone was granted a Regular Service Commission with the rank of pilot officer in the General Duties (Flying) Branch of the RAF.

* Councillor A Linton told Lanark Town Council that the County Council had taken a decision, which meant the new dual carriageway would bypass Lanark and Carluke. The new carriageway would run from Abington to Cumbernauld.

* At a meeting of Lanark Choral Society it was announced by Mr Prentice that he intended to take on Handels Messiah and was looking to arrange practices during the summer months.

* A total of nine Leadhills residents appeared before Sheriff Scott Moncrieff after an assault on two men. After hearing the evidence of a large number of witnesses the sheriff found the charge not proven.

* It was announced that from August 6 to 13 an international aviation meeting would be held in Lanark.

* At Lanark Sheriff Court two Carnwath men pled guilty to conducting themselves in a disorderly manner and committing a breach of the peace. They were fined 10s with the alternative of seven days imprisonment.

* A smoking concert was held in Law. A most enjoyable evening was had with Mr Stuart Kerr occupying the chair.

* An exhibition in needlework was held at Carluke Public School. The work was that of the pupils in the art needlework class.

* Braidwood Celtic faced Lanark Albion in the Menzies Cup. Celts won 3-1.
