50 YEARS AGO

* The annual supper of the Kirkton Bonnie Jean Club took place. Tom Gray proposed the Immortal Memory while Alex McDonald gave the toast to Jean Armour.

* Lanarkshire jobless figures rose to over 11,000. Only three of the county's 16 exchanges recorded decreases with Lanark and Carluke both rising.

* Lanark firemen and police spent four hours trying to free a driver after his tanker jack-knifed near Douglas. The driver was set free and was taken to Law Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

* The AGM of the Lanark branch of the National Farmers Union took place. Mr R Logan was elected president of the branch for the year in place of Lt Col R Monteith.

* A Dundee dancehall proprietor spent six hours in a police cell for the non-payment of a 3 fine for a motorway offence. After much persuasion, he paid the fine.

* Senior clubs Preston North End and Partick Thistle were set to attend Carluke Rovers Challenge Cup tie against Mount Ellen. Preston were

100 YEARS AGO

* A woman admitted being drunk and disorderly on Lanark High Street. Provost Macleary imposed a fine of 10s with the alternative of seven days imprisonment.

* With cold weather engulfing the area, curling was played on Lanark Loch. In the final of the Presidents Prize Bailie Morton's rink easily defeated the rink skippered by James C Day.

* There was a spate of tobogganing accidents in the area. One girl fractured her leg near Bellefield Sanitarium while a boy was injured while sledging down Lanark High Street.

* A labourer was charged with trespassing onto a farm in the pursuit of game and attempting to shoot the gamekeeper. Sheriff Moncrieff found the accused guilty and fined him 1 with 2 4s in expenses.

* Owing to the large crowds gathered for political events at Carluke Town Hall in recent weeks it put severe strain on the hall's gallery. New wooden supports were to be drafted in.

* Carluke citizen Thomas Morton J.P passed away after a short illness. He was 62.

* Carluke Hearts faced Craignethan Thistle in the second round of the Juvenile Cup. Hearts won 3-1.
