Down Memory Lane in Clydesdale

SAME VIEW, DIFFERENT ERA: More than half a century after this atmospheric photo was taken of one of the famous New Lanark rows of tenements in 1958, the scene being surveyed by the bygone, pipe-smoking villager has outwardly changed little. However, major changes ARE on the way with news that the last of these streets to be renovated will soon be ready to become homes again. See this week’s Gazette for more details.

50 YEARS AGO

n Crossford’s well-known sub-postmaster and local councillor James Hogg died aged 76. Mr Hogg was originally a miner before becoming a postman and then sub-postmaster.

n Three hitch-hiking Russian teenagers demonstrated a Russian dance at Carluke Cross. The Russians didn’t speak any English but thrilled the small crowd who had gathered.

n Over £95 was raised at a bring and buy coffee evening in Law Hospital.

n A Renfrewshire drainer was trapped under five tonnes as he worked 12 feet down in a sewer trench near Jerviswood Drive.

n Due to the bad weather, Lanark Bowling Green was officially opened and then duly closed for a further week as the green was not up to the required standard.

n It was back to school for Cartland children after an extended Easter break. Parents stopped them attending school in Lanark to draw attention to the awful road conditions in the village.

n J.H Linaker, of Motherwell YMCA, won the second annual Tom Scott Memorial Road Race.

100 YEARS AGO

n At the Burgh Court, a labourer was found to be drunk and incapable in the Wellgate. He was fined 10s with the alternative of seven days imprisonment.

n There was an influx of visitors from the capital to Lanark as it was the Edinburgh Spring Holiday. Local traders were kept busy and slight showers didn’t dampen the festivities.

n A letter was submitted to the Upperward District Committee about the pollution of a dam at the Low Mill in Carluke.

n A special meeting of Carluke School Board was conferred for the purpose of interviewing candidates for the assistant master position at Law School.

n Miss Janie Allan and Miss Barbara Wylie were to be the guest speakers at a universal suffrage meeting which was to be held in the Dr Rankin Memorial Hall.

n Rev F.M Maxwell was honoured by his congregation and friends on the 25th anniversary of his ministry in Carluke.

n Law Volunteers faced Larkhall United in the Lanarkshire League Law won the match 3-0.
