Down Memory Lane in Clydesdale

LOWTHER LOSSES: Like every community in Scotland, big or small, Leadhills men fell in what was then known as the Great War of 1914-18 and rightly had a memorial raised to them. The names of the fallen of World War Two were added later. This scene shows the viilage’s tribute in stone in 1929. As the 100th anniversary of that first conflict approaches, a national monument refurbishment scheme is being planned.

50 YEARS AGO

n Carluke and District Canine Society reported record entries to its 54th annual show, to be held in Carluke Town Hall.

n A team of young dancers, under the tutelage of Mrs A McKenzie, raised a total of £124 at their show. The money was to go towards medical supplies in the Far East.

n Rev Alasdair Kennedy was the sole nominee for the vacancy at Law Parish Church. He was unanimously elected by a open vote at a congregational meeting.

n The Cartland Bridge Hotel officially opened its doors to the public. Advertised as a ‘country club-style hotel’, the former mansion had latterly been used as a nursing home.

n Lanark couple Mr and Mrs William Aitken were hosts to 230 pensioners in the Market Hotel Hall. The company enjoyed a programme, of solos, duets and comedy.

n Lanark Rugby Club arranged an exhibition match against a Glasgow Select, as part of the town’s Freedom From Hunger campaign.

n Carluke Rovers demolished Lanark United 8-1 in a one-sided match at Loch Park.

100 YEARS AGO

n At Lanark J.P Court, a well-known local tailor pled guilty to a charge of being in a helpless state of intoxication at Braidwood Station. He was admonished.

n Three Lanark ice-cream merchants were charged at the Burgh Court for having kept their premises open on a Sunday. All three were guilty and fined £2.

n A 18-year-old signal lighter was killed near Symington Station. He was in the middle of lighting lamps when he was run down by an express train.

n A meeting of the Law branch of the Miners County Union was held with John Stirling presiding.

n Anxiety over the safety of Carluke natives caught up in terrible floods in Dayton, Ohio were put to rest after a cable from the members of the Russell family stating everyone was safe and well.

n At a Carluke School Board meeting it was announced that the assistant master of Law School, Mr Alexander Morrison, was resigning.

n Former Law Volunteers fullback James McCrory played a starring role in the Scotland v England junior international.
