EARLIER DAYS: The Scottish Government recently announced that it was making money available to ensure that all Scotland’s war memorials were looking good for 2014, to commemorate the 100 years since the start of World War One. 50 YEARS AGO

n An unemployed Carluke labourer was fined £6 at Lanark JP Court for assaulting his wife and committing a breach of the peace at his home the previous Saturday morning.

n The rents of Lanark County Council’s 45,000 houses, irrespective of sizes, were to be raised by a flat rate of 2s a week from May 16.

n Carluke’s Dr Daniel Martin, senior lecturer in mathematics at Glasgow University, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in recognition of his contribution to mathematical science.

n Eighteen cows and two bulls died in a fire which swept through a hay shed and byre at Spittal Farm, Carnwath.

n At a special general meeting of Lanark Golf Club, the club council was given the go ahead to its plans for developing and reconstructing the clubhouse in a package costing around £5000.

n Ex-Motherwell footballer Ian Weir, then of Stirling Albion, was guest speaker at St Andrew’s Parish Church Men’s Club in Carluke.

100 YEARS AGO

n Dr ATA Gourlay was appointed medical officer at Lanark’s Lockhart Hospital in place of Dr Guthrie. He had already won the confidence of many in Lanark and had every prospect of building up a large practice.

n A stunning performance by soprano Jenny McGregor had made up part of a “most meritorious” week-long variety show by McAndrew’s Electric Theatre in Lanark.

n New Lanark Amateur Dramatic Club was to give a reproduction of stirring drama The Last Shilling in the Large Hall the following Thursday and Friday.

n The villa known as Olivelea in Carluke’s Market Road was sold at auction for £432 to Mr William Hastie of Clyde Street, Carluke.

n Carluke Milton Rovers centre half Craig Brown signed for Bradford City. The 20-year-old, who had been a stand-out for Rovers all season, had also been wanted by Celtic and Motherwell but they failed to secure his signature.

n In a double departure from Carluke Milton Rovers, Brown’s team-mate Joe Dodds signed for Celtic.
