AMBULANCE PROBLEMS: NHS Lanarkshire officials promised to investigate problems with ambulance cover in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area following a meeting of the North Lanarkshire Council’s North Area Committee. Councillors persuaded bosses to look into the ambulance situation after claiming that public transport provision to local hospitals was ‘diabolical’ – a difficulty more acute by the fact that ambulances from North Lanarkshire will invariably take patients to Monklands Hospital instead of the preferred Glasgow hospital, said Councillor Murray.

FIRST AID CLASSES: Cumbernauld College are to introduce first aid classes geared to help employees of New Town firms. Changing the location of the Cumbernauld Citizens’ Advice Bureau from Carron House to a prime site in the Town Centre opposite the Post Office proved to be of great value to customers.

ABANDONED: A Council meeting was suddenly abandoned amid angry scenes. Furious Labour and SNP Councillors continued to argue after Monday night’s Planning Committee came to an abrupt end after four hours of rancorous debate over Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Council’s spending plans for next year.

This week in 1984

MEDAL PRESENTATION: Croy County Councillor Dan Taggart was presented with the Benimerente Medal by Archbishop James Scanlan of Glasgow for his services to Local Government. The medal given by Pope Paul VI was presented to the 75-year-old County Councillor in front of a large audience at Holy Cross Primary in the village.
