WRIGHT STUFF: Cumbernauld Airport marked the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight thanks to instructor Colin McKinnon, who flew a microlight carrying a piece of fabric from the Wright’s plane, called the Flyer, which he had purchased in a Sotheby’s auction for £1500.

BIG PRESENT: Bingo fan Ellen Armstrong had reason to celebrate - 50,000 of them in fact, as she scooped a national prize at the County Bingo in Cumbernauld.“It was a lovely feeling,” said Ellen, “Everybody in the hall came up and congratulated me.” Ellen added that she intended to use the winnings to buy her house in Eastfield, take her husband Alan on holiday, and treat her family.

SWEET SUCCESS: Ravenswood couple Fraser and Penelope McKenzie won a giant seven-kilo Toblerone bar in a competition run by the local Woolco superstore. They generously donated the prize to Ochilview, the home for elderly people. Fraser said: “We decided we would never manage to eat our way through the huge chocolate bar and would like to give it to a deserving group who will appreciate the gift”.

MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES: Joseph Haldane, a soldier from Seafar, was mentioned in the Queen’s dispatches for exceptional service in Northern Ireland. Joseph said he was mentioned for something he did, but security precautions meant he was unable to divulge the details.
