ABRONHILL HOUSES WIN AWARD: A new housing development at Larch Place, Abronhill was awarded a £1000 prize in Energy Action Scotland’s Energysavers Awards. The 11 homes at Larch Place were the first new social housing to be built in Abronhill for more than 20 years and featured an energy efficient community heating system which was said to halve the cost of heating for tenants, providing warm and affordable homes.

This week in 1988

SCHOOL LEAVERS’ WARNING: Cumbernauld Unemployed Workers Union this week warned that school leavers could face a financial crisis once they left school. The centre warned, that despite Government promises of training schemes many young people will struggle to find a place. They also warned that if they do not have a place within three months, any social security benefits will stop. The fear was raised that it was an impossible task for the Government to secure a training place for every unemployed 16 and 17-year old.

TOWN CENTRE TRADERS’ VIEWS: Traders operating within the town centre were given the opportunity to express their opinions on Sunday trading. The survey came hot on the heels of the Woolco superstore being given permission to trade on a Sunday. The offer by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to consider seven-day trading was given a cool reception by some of the shop owners within the shopping malls.

This week in 1973

SCHOOL FACES CLOSURE: Castlecary Primary School faced closure due to a dwindling school roll. The Denny District Education sub-committee informed the County Committee that three children who were due to enter primary three had been transferred to Greenhill Primary, reducing the school roll to five pupils.
