Go-Ahead: Approval was granted for a park and ride facility at Greenfaulds Station. North Lanarkshire Council also authorised the construction of a new road linking Greenfaulds and Lenziemill to the A73. The work was expected to cost £2.6 million and the council secured £1.1 million towards this from the Public Transport Fund. Rail services at Greenfaulds were also to be stepped up, with trains to Falkirk, Motherwell and Stirling running every 30 minutes with trains to Glasgow every 15 minutes.

PEOPLE POWER: Parents in Castlecary were celebrating as Strathclyde Regional Council reversed a decision to withdraw their school bus service following a boycott. Happy parents and eleven children. who had been protesting outside the school during the high-powered meeting where the decision was reversed, rejoiced at the news.

Hide AdTheatre row: Cumbernauld Theatre management were fuming after a heavily-promoted premiere was postponed. The theatre had distributed over 30,000 leaflets advertising 7:84 Theatre Company’s The Dingin’ Doon O’ Donny’s Hoose by Ena Lamont Stewart, but the playwright called it off, claiming the play was not ready. The company now planned to substitute another play for the scheduled October performances. “We are very disappointed,” said a spokesman for Cumbernauld Theatre, adding that they would be seeking some form of compensation.

river probe: Officials of the Clyde river Purification Board were to meet with Cumbernauld Town Council to investigate suspected pollution of the River Luggie by factories in Blairlinn Industrial Estate. Dead fish were spotted in the Luggie by a Kirkintilloch fisherman .
