This week in 1997

NOILLAIG Chridheil - that was the message in Gaelic from pupils in Condorrat who constructed a giant banner with these words. This was to mark the opening of the Gaelic- Medium unit by education minister Brian Wilson MP. Carols were sung in Gaelic.

This week in 1987

A GIFT to the town for the future. That was a good description of 40 new species of tree were planted in Cumbernauld by volunteers including pupils from Glencryan School. They were placed at a specially designed new walkway at Palacerigg Community Park as part of the Community Environment Project which hoped to increase the local level of greenery.

This week in 1977

CUMBERNAULD Leisure Centre was hosting a touring pantomine called Crackers - while Santa arrived in Cumbernauld to be met by Cumbernauld Development Corporation chairman Sir Donald Liddle who met him on the steps of St Mungo’s and thanked him for making such a long journey. Santa then switched on the Christmas lights.

This week in 1972

A LIVE Christmas music roadshow would tour the town thanks to Cumbernauld Silver Band. They had hired a bus to take them to locations as varied as St Mungo’s, Cumbernauld Village and the lounge bar of the Jack Snipe. The 12 bandsmen had opted chiefly to sing Christmas carols.
